It was a shocking first round for the Puerto Rican from Fajardo P.R. as Jeremias Ponce his rival from Argentina jumped on him from the gun overwhelming him with a busy barrage of punches and connections where usually it is Matias who fights at that pace with his suffocating style resulting in KOs as his record would indicate as all his wins are of the result.
Jeremias Ponce (30-1, 20KOs) entered the ring undefeated in a sold out crowd of about 4,700 ecstatic fans wielding Puerto Rican and Argentinian flags at The Armory in Minneapolis M.N., Subriel Matias (19-1, 19KOs) had already mentioned at press conferences and to the media that in this combat for the vacant IBF junior welterweight title vacated by then Undisputed World Champion Josh Taylor that there would surely be a knock out and it did not matter who went down between him or his foe but he surely was entering the ring in this battle to be KO'd or do the damage himself and knock out his opponent which true to his word he put Ponce down in round five where it did the harm necessary for Ponces's corner to say it was enough giving Matias the TKO win. Matias who is now Puerto Rico's eight World Champion (male) in the 140 pound weight class in history claims The IBF Belt which puts him right at the top with some class A opposition occupying the other alphabet hardware, "Im on cloud nine right now" he said through an interpreter, " I don't think I've woken up from this dream, Maybe I can tell you how it feels tomorrow but right now its a dream come true".
Premier Boxing Champions & Showtime put on a heck of a show with the co-feature pinning former WBA "regular" welterweight titlist, Minneapolis native Jamal James (28-2, 12KOs) ending the longest layoff of his career against Alberto Palmetta (18-2, 13KOs) a 2016 Olympian where James got the victory by a lop-sided unanimous decision victory.
Dominican junior welterweight sensation Elvis Rodriguez (14-1-1, 12KOs) outpointed The Puerto Rican from Allentown Pennsylvania Joseph Adorno (17-2-2, 14 KOs) who came off the canvas twice in this match of highly regarded prospects, Rodriguez who was on a layoff of eleven months said through in interpreter "I had not fought in a long time, I had a long layoff, I was a little rusty but once i found my hook I found my distance, I thought I had him once I landed that right hook but he got up he is a warrior a good fighter".
